Retinol is very mild, and can be found in popular moisturizers and creams that are over the counter, and doesn’t need a doctor’s prescription. It’s Retin A that is very harsh and need a prescription. I’m not sure what this article meant.
Cleanse and dry your face as usual, and apply a small amount of retinol cream to your under-eye area. Apply every other night to start; too much retinol can cause skin irritation. Begin daily use after a few weeks if you haven’t experienced side effects such as redness or dry skin.
There are some skin concerns associated with the ingredient that you should be aware of. “Based on the chemistry of the ingredients, which cause a drying effect of the oil glands, even over the counter retinols can lead to redness and flaking,” explains Dr. Gross. “UV sensitivity is another side-effect that is based on increased uptake of the sun’s rays. The redder the skin, the more the skin absorbs sun’s rays. Skin is already inflamed with baseline sun sensitivity, the sun’s rays can heighten this reaction.”
For example, you can not ‘cure’ your genetics. Look at your mom (or dad) do you look like her? How is her skin? What does she do different than you? 95% of the time you’ll have the same predisposed conditions as your parents in terms of height, weight, or skin. That said, you can slow the effects of aging and minimize the signs of it but keeping your face moisturized correctly. I practically believe my skin responds very well to collagen infused products, which is why I recommended the vitamin c cream, however, if you’re a younger lady and you have under-eye circles, all the collagen in the world may not help. Try things out, experiment, there is no simple answer, but if you’re lucky you’ll find something that works like I did.
Topical retinols have extensively been used by dermatologists to help combat and reverse the visual effects of aging, such as wrinkles, laxity, and discoloration. Retinols because they accelerate cell turnover, can also improve blemishes and the appearance of pores. The retinol molecule is highly-sensitive and vulnerable to breakdown if not properly protected. Retinol 0.5 employs an optimized delivery system and protective packaging to ensure stability and efficacy of pure retinol. Retinol 0.5 works with skin’s natural lipid structure to promote optimal absorption.
Quick Summary: Obagi Retinol 1.0 is a top performer compared to just about any other retinol cream on the market. Its 1% concentration formula is very effective, but also gentle. We didn’t experience much redness or peeling with this product. We also like some of the complimentary ingredients in Obagi Retinol 1.0. It also includes some skin soothing things like shea butter and bisabolol. Read our full review here… or click here to go buy it!
Yes this is a good eye cream. it says on the box but it can tend to burn the eye area but that just means that the ingredients are working. it did leave my eye are red and sometimes with a burn sensation
Even still, this hasn’t completely spared me from those famous retinoid rough patches. And despite having two decades’ worth of derm secrets embedded in my brain, I’ve only very recently found a handful of retinols my skin won’t reject. (I’m 40, guys.) Full credit goes to the chemists behind these formulas, who’ve dreamed up innovative ways to deliver all the magic of this molecule without the cursed side effects.
At Dermalogica, we use advanced microencapsulation technology to help stabilize Retinol and ensure its maximum potency. This approach protects it from degrading as soon as it is exposed, enabling it to deliver superior results.
Retinoids, on the other hand, are prescription strength under the names retinoic acid or tretinoin. These are much more potent and work faster than OTC retinols because no conversion needs to be made by the body from retinol into retinoic acid—it is already formulated with retinoic acid. The classic brands Retin-A, Renova, Tazorac and Differin fall under this category.
The great ingredient list combined with the applicator that immediately felt like a trip to the spa made it our top pick. And at $32 you’ll get to enjoy that spa-like feeling every morning for a fraction of the price.
Still, our tester found that the retinol, which absorbed quickly into her skin, “made my skin feel way softer and look a bit more even after just two uses, which was an awesome surprise.” Overall, though, she felt that this retinol was the most do-able for daily use: “I’m in my late 20s and don’t need nor want a heavy duty, deep-wrinkle retinol,” she says. “This formula was mess-free and really lightweight, and it felt like it could be a long-term maintenance product for me, rather than a quick fix, which I liked.”

Rouleau breaks down why this particular schedule works: “Since retinol is pushing up skin cells to the surface at a faster rate, retinol can cause micro-peeling (invisible peeling) in most skin types, so it’s important to not use it every night. Because it takes two days for the cells to regenerate to the surface and cause the skin to get flaky, using an exfoliating serum on Wednesday is perfect to remove the surface dead cells that appear. Also, retinol may work even better when used back on the skin on Thursday, because now it can penetrate deeper into the skin because of the acid exfoliation the night before. Then, a hydrating serum is added to the mix once a week to give the skin a break, using barrier repair and nourishing ingredients to keep the skin calm and hydrated. It’s also important to do it this way simply because the skin performs its best when it has a variety of high-performance ingredients instead of the same one ingredient night in and night out.”
